 I always feared Death.

The mere thought of it sent shivers through me, an constant terror that gripped my soul. The way stories spoke of it—cold, merciless, inevitable. I grew up believing Death was a shadowy figure cloaked in black, hollow-eyed and cruel, waiting in the corners of the night to steal away those we loved.

It was an executioner, a cruel force that stole without warning, an ending no one could escape.

And then, one day, Death came for me.

I had imagined it a thousand times, how it would feel. The dread, the panic, the suffocating fear of slipping away. I thought I would beg, I thought I would fight, I thought I would shatter into a million pieces trying to hold on to the fragile strands of life.

But I did none of those things. Because Death… was not what I had feared.

It did not come with chains. It did not whisper my name with finality, nor did it rip me from this world with ruthless hands.

Death wore white.

A soft, flowing cloak that rippled like the clouds at dawn, weightless and endless. Its face was not a skull, nor was it empty darkness. Instead, it glowed—warm, golden, like embers in a fading fire. It wasn’t threatening. It wasn’t cruel. It was… peaceful.

I couldn’t move. Not because I was paralyzed with fear, but because I had never seen something so breathtaking. So impossibly serene.

And then Death spoke.

Its voice was gentle, like waves against the shore. Like my mother’s voice.

“Don’t worry, child,” it said. “All sufferings shall be over soon. Then, there will be peace. Your heart will be at rest.”

Something inside me broke. A dam that had been holding back a lifetime of pain, of exhaustion, of silent battles.

Tears filled my eyes—not from fear, but from something else.

Relief.

I had spent my whole life fearing Death, running from it, dreading its touch. But now that it stood before me, I didn’t feel terror. I felt seen. I felt peace.

Because Death was not cruel.

Death was mercy.

It had seen my struggles. It had watched my silent suffering, the pain I had hidden behind tired smiles. And now, it was offering me something .

Rest.

For the first time, I saw Death for what it truly was. Not an ending, not a punishment, not a void swallowing everything whole.

But a release. A return to something pure, something weightless.

My breath trembled as I looked at the figure before me.

My entire life, I had feared this moment. But now that it was here, I realized something.

I wasn’t afraid anymore.

A soft breeze wrapped around me.

The ache in my bones, the heaviness in my chest, the storm I had fought—it all faded.

For the first time in what felt like an eternity, I felt light.

I felt free.

Death reached out a hand, and when its fingers brushed mine, I didn’t feel cold. I didn’t feel pain.

I felt peace.

Peace that filled the spaces where fear had once lived.

And as I closed my eyes, surrendering myself  to the quiet, to the warmth, to the embrace I had feared for so long…

I let go.

And finally, finally…

I was at rest.
